CONWAY - On Tuesday afternoon, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (22-24) fell to the College of Charleston Cougars (25-20) by the score of 2-1. This was the second year in a row that the Chants were on the losing end of a pitchers' duel as they by that same exact final score.
The two starters for both squads that were the story of the game, but the Cougars were able to jump on the Chanticleers starter Ashley Guillette early as a Kelly Sinclair connected with RBI bunt single as part of a two-run top of the first and take a 2-0 lead.
After freshman Taylor Sweigart bunted with one out in the bottom of the third to reach safely, junior Alexis Alvino answered with a double down the left field line and gave the Chanticleers their only run of the game to cut the deficit to one, 2-1.
Neither team was able to produce another run as both starters bent but didn't break as they allowed base runners but none of which came around to score.
Charleston starter Summer Jenkins went the whole seven innings for a complete game win allowing six hits while stranding five Chants on base. Jenkins now improves to 10-9 on the season with her sixth complete game of the season.
This is the second time in three games that the junior Guillette has pitched a complete game and took the loss while allowing no earned runs. On the afternoon, the right-hander allowed just five hits while stranding eight Cougars. With the defeat, picked up her eighth complete game of the season but drops to 11-12 on the season.
