NORMAN, Okla. – Morgan Deneen, Thadd Obecny and Daniel Overas of the Coastal Carolina men's golf team were named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars Wednesday, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 (for Division I), and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
It is the first time in program history that three Chanticleers have earned All-America Scholar status in the same year. Coastal previously produced two All-America Scholars in 2007, 2009 and 2012. The Coastal Carolina men's golf program now has 13 All-America Scholars dating back to 1988.
Deneen holds a cumulative GPA of 3.321 as a marketing major. The redshirt junior led Coastal to a Sun Belt championship in 2018, finishing as the tournament's Championship Medalist and setting a conference record with a 54-hole score of 203. Deneen's 73.00 scoring average in 2017-18 ranked second on the team, and he finished six of his 12 rounds in the 60's. Deneen was voted the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year and a first team all-conference selection, and he was named to the Sun Belt Academic Honor Roll.
Obecny closed out his Coastal career in 2017-18 as a third team All-Sun Belt selection. The senior was instrumental in Coastal winning the 2018 Sun Belt championship, placing ninth during the stroke-play portion and winning both of his match-play duels. Obecny had five top-20 finishes last season, including six rounds in the 60's. An interdisciplinary studies major with a cumulative GPA of 3.262, Obecny's career scoring average of 73.90 places him 10th in Chanticleer history.
Overas is a management major with a 3.543 cumulative GPA heading into his senior season. As a junior in 2017-18, Overas posted a season scoring average of 74.00. He recorded his first collegiate win at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate, shooting a 3-under 207 and winning a two-way playoff. Overas made Coastal's Dean's List in both fall 2017 and spring 2018, and earned a place on the Sun Belt Commissioner's List for surpassing a 3.5 GPA in 2017-18.
