Rock Hill, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team battled former Big South opponent Winthrop to a 1-1 tie in Rock Hill, Sunday afternoon. The result now moves the Chants record to 1-0-1 and the Eagles open at 0-0-1.
Winthrop got on the scoreboard first finding the back of the net from 15 yards out when Natalie Royaards one timer was able to get by the Coastal goalie with 16:19 on the clock. In the first half the Eagles were able to outshoot CCU 5-3 but the Chants had a 2-1 advantage on corner attempts.
The second half opened with Winthrop getting the first attempt, and afterwards Coastal put on the offensive pressure and getting the equalizer from
Mackenzie Gibbs at the 56:03 mark and the feed from
Baylee Price. The Chants continued with the shots to outshoot the Eagles 17-11 overall but was unable to find the go-ahead goal.
CCU will return to action at home on the pitch on Thursday, Aug. 23, as the Chants will host in-state rival College of Charleston. The kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
