Chanticleers Swept In Honolulu

HONOLULU, HI. - Late on Thursday evening, the Chanticleer women's volleyball team fell to 1-3 on the young season as they opened up a two match series with the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine in the Stan Sheriff Center by the score of 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-18). The theme of the match for Coastal Carolina was the offensive struggles as they hit .019.

In set one, the Chants were unable to find rhythm on offense as they fell to largest deficit of eight points, 19-11. Redshirt freshman Christina Nance and sophomore Kyla Manning help rally CCU team by cutting margin down to three to go along with the Wahine offensive miscues. Nance block had a big block and Manning had three kills to make it 20-17. That was the closest Coastal would get in set one as the Wahine went on to win, reeling off the next five points. A trio of Rainbow players, McKenna Granato, Norene Iosia, and Sara Liva all hit over .400 in the set as they added three kills each.

With Coastal down 17-13 in set two, Head Coach Jozsef Forman made a change at setter and brought in freshman Ann-Katrine Hakansson. Hakansson gave the Chants a brief spark as she and team rallied off five consecutive points by kills from senior Dora Lulic and sophomore Kaylah House kills. It was not enough as Hawaii went on to win the set and to into intermission up two sets to none. Granato came up with six more kills in set two.

It was a couple of back-to-backs that helped propel the Chanticleers out to a 7-1 lead in set three. Manning aced the Wahine defense two straight times and freshman Anett Nemeth had consecutive kills for the first time in the match in which she was coming off of dual conference honors as Sun Belt Freshman and Player of the Week. This sparked Wahine Head Coach Robyn Ah Mow-Santos to call time out.

After the Hawaii time out, the Rainbow stormed right back and never looked behind and as they took the set and the match. As a team, the Wahine hit .343 and Granato matched what she had done in set two as she had six more put aways with a hitting percentage of .308.

Nemeth led the Chants with seven kills on the night but it was Lulic who was the most as she had five kills on seven attempts while hitting .714. Sara Boothe contributed with 17 assists and Nance had three blocks.

Granato led the Rainbow Wahine with 15 kills and Iosia (17) and Faith Ma'fala (19) shared time at setter totaling 36 assists.

The two teams will do it again on Friday night at 7 p.m. HST, 1 a.m. EST Saturday.
