
CCU Starts Season At Carolina Challenge

RACE RESULTS
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 2018 cross country got into full swing on Saturday morning on the campus of South Carolina at the Sandhill REC 5K course for the Carolina Challenge. The Chanticleer women finished 7th overall with 128 points and the men finished 3rd with an overall score of 98.
Men
Sophomore Doug Mullen finished the strongest of any Chanticleer runner as he 22nd overall with a time of 17:06.6 which was 1:40.6 behind Nicholas Ciaccia of East Carolina. 2018 has started off good for Mullen as the sophomore was able top his time in 5K races from a season ago when his previous personal best was 17:08.3.
To round out the morning, for the men, Andrew Avery came in 25th at a time of 17:25.5. In 18th place, sophomore Elijah Lawson topped his best time in 5K races from 2017 as he finished 20th, almost four seconds faster at 17:35.4. Two freshman, Matthew Evans and Charlie Martinez also got their first collegiate experience. Evans finished with a time of 17:41.5 which was good for 21st , while Martinez he finished with a time of 18:31.5, good for 24th.
East Carolina was the overall winner in the men's field as they placed all five competitors in the top 10.
Women
A quintet of Chanticleer freshman represented the women on Saturday, all in their first collegiate races. Heather Delaplaine finished 48th with a time of 20:18.19, which was 3:10.9 behind Grace Sullivan of East Carolina.
Also, Bailey Johnson finished 57th and a time of 21.47.1. At 21:53.2, Alyssa Lynch finished 59th with a time of 21.53.2 and Rebecca Lehman rounded out the Coastal field in 68th place with a time of 22:51.8.
CCU Cross Country will return to action this Friday, September 7 as they compete in their home meet at the Hackler Golf Club. The running starts for the women at 5:30 p.m. while the men kick-off at 6:00 p.m.
