DURHAM, N.C. - In their second match of the day on Friday at the Duke Invitational, Coastal Carolina volleyball dropped straight sets to the host Duke Blue Devils (23-25, 17-25, 22-25). It was the Blue Devil block that was the difference in the match as they totaled 15.5 blocks on the night.
In set one, neither team was efficient on offense as both squads were under .100, but Coastal was stymied by the Duke block as they forced the Chanticleers into nine errors on 41 attempts for a hitting percentage of .049, while tallying ten blocks in the set. With the set tied at 15, Duke went on a 10-8 run to close out the set when they forced four CCU attack errors.
By hitting .312 in set two, the Blue Devils defeated the Chanticleers by nine points. Their block also continued to be too much as they had 6.5 blocks while holding Coastal to a .077 hitting percentage. Lily Cooper and Ade Owokoniran led the set for the Duke with four kills apiece.
Set three proved to be the most competitive as there were 15 ties and five lead changes. The Chants grabbed their first lead of the match when they took their biggest lead of 9-7. Sophomore
Kyla Manning led the CCU run with three of her five kills in the set.
Both teams exchanged points throughout the set as Coastal was able to hang on to the lead until Duke grabbed it at 20-19 and again it was the Duke block that proved the difference in the final points of the set with two of their four blocks.
Manning led the Chanticleers with 12 kills and senior
Sara Boothe led the team with 22 assists.
CCU falls to 1-6 on the season.
Coastal is back in action on Thursday this evening as they take on the College of Charleston Cougars at home at the HTC Center with a first serve at 7 p.m.
