DURHAM, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers dropped their sixth consecutive match and fell to 1-7 on the season on Saturday afternoon to the Cincinnati Bearcats, 2-3 (25-21, 13-25, 18-25, 25-20, 11-15) at Cameron Indoor Stadium in the Duke Invitational.
Freshman
Anett Nemeth led the Chanticleers with four kills and two blocks as Coastal jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match as they defeated the Bearcats 25-22. The Chanticleers used their biggest lead of the set of five points (10-5) and three CCU service aces (
Kyla Manning - 2, Nemeth - 1) as security late in set one to hold on for the win.
The Bearcats went onto win the next two sets and go up 2-0. In set two, Cincinnati hit .417 to CCU's .167. The margin was a little closer but Coastal was outhit in set three by the count of .355 to .250. Jordan Thompson led UC with 11 kills and four digs in the two sets.
With a set down in the third, it looked like Cincinnati was going to run away with the set and the match as Thompson helped her team grind their way out to an 8-7 lead with as she had two early kills.
Coastal Carolina did not shy away from the competition as they turned around the set winning the next six of seven points when their block forced Erica Kostelac into three errors.
Briefly, Cincinnati had retaken the lead, but again, CCU was poised to victory by winning the final nine points out of 11. Manning during that run was responsible for all four of her kills in the set. Nemeth led the Chants team with five kills in ten attempts with a hitting percentage of .400.
In set five, Coastal had an early advantage of 6-4 when they used a combination of three kills from three different players; Manning,
Carla Cahill, and
Reka Orsi Toth and three errors by the Bearcats. The Chants weren't able to keep their grasp on the lead when the Cincinnati won the next five points as Dasha Cabarkapa (2) and Thompson (1) combined for three kills.
The Bearcats forced the Chanticleers into four errors over the last 11 points. Thompson led the team with five kills in final set.
Manning led the Chanticleers with 16 kills and was named to the all-tournament team and sophomore
Kaylah House had eight kills with a hitting percent of .667. Senior setter
Sara Boothe led the Coastal with 35 assists.
Thompson led Cincinnati with a double-double as she had 25 kills on 53 attempts and 12 digs. Arman Heckmueller had a match-high 42 digs in the win.
Coastal Carolina is 0-2 in five set matches in 2018.
The Chanticleers will be in action next weekend at home as they start the Coastal Carolina Invitational as they play host to the College of Charleston, TCU and Pitt. The action starts will start on Thursday, September 14 as the Coastal takes on the College of Charleston at 7 p.m. at the HTC Center.
