Chants Fall to Buccaneers in Four Sets

DURHAM, N.C. - In the first match of the Duke Invitational, the Coastal Carolina volleyball team got off to a fast start in set one, but East Tennessee State rallied to win the final three sets and the match (25-15, 17-25, 26-28, 18-25).

With the score knotted at 9-8 in set one, CCU used a 5-0 run to take the lead, as Freshman Anett Nemeth connected with two of her nine set one kills. The Chants offense proved to be too much for East Tennessee as they were victorious in set one, 25-14. The Hungarian native, Nemeth led the way with no errors, while hitting .818.

In the second set as both teams were playing back-and-forth volleyball,  ETSU led by the score of 14-12, the Buccaneers made 11-6 run to close out the set and win 25-17. Kaela Massey led Eastern Tennessee, with five kills and a .455 hitting percentage. As a team, Eastern Tennessee outhit the Chanticleers in the second set, .225 to .047.

After the intermission, the Chanticleers fell behind early, 11-7, but were able to stage a rally as they won the next nine of 11 points. Dora Lulic led the run with three of her 10 kills in the match. The Bucs came back to tie it at 21, going on an 8-6 rally. Coastal hung in throughout and were able to tie it over five times over the next 12 points but were not able to retake the lead as ETSU went onto win the set 28-26. A.J. Lux led all players in the set with seven kills on 18 attempts.

The offensive woes continued for Coastal Carolina in set three, as they were not able to get into any offensive rhythm and were out hit by .243 to .100. ETSU went onto win set four, 25-18, but the other numbers did not stick out too glaringly for CCU.  The Chants had led the set with three blocks to one, but Eastern Tennessee State led the set in digs, 18-15 and committed six errors while Coastal had eight.

Anett Nemeth led the Chants with her second double-double performance of the year as she led the match with 21 and had 16 digs. Senior Sara Booth had a team-high 35 assists and 14 digs. Two other CCU players had double-dig performances; Carla Cahill (20) and Reka Orsi Toth (10).

Three ETSU players had double-digit kill performances in the match as Leah Clayton led the way with 17, A.J. Lux had 16 and Massey had 14.
