MONROE, La. – The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team outscored ULM by 23 points in the second half of Thursday night's game, leading to a 79-54 victory for the Chants at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
Coastal (10-9, 2-6) used a stretch of 14 unanswered points in the third quarter to break open a game that had previously been tied five times. ULM (7-12, 1-7) was held without a point for over six minutes of action as the Chants pulled in front for a double-digit lead.
The Chants led by 12 at the end of the third quarter and shot over 50 percent from the field in the fourth as they continued to pull away for the 25-point final margin.
Coastal received balanced scoring in the winning effort as four Chants reached double figures.
Caitlin Roche led all players with 18 points on 7-17 from the field with four 3-pointers.
DJ Williams scored 17 points, including 12 in the second half, to reach double digits for the 11th straight game.
Aja Blount recorded 13 points.
Breelyn Blanding had a perfect shooting night, going 4-4 from the field and sinking one attempt at the line for 11 points.
Coastal dominated down low and on the boards, holding a 45-28 advantage in rebounds and outscoring ULM 32-20 in the paint. Williams and Blount each had game highs of nine rebounds, narrowly missing out on their third and second double-doubles of the season, respectively. Williams also dished out six of Coastal's 15 assists.
Coastal and ULM each scored 14 points from the field in the opening quarter, but an extra pair of free-throw makes gave the Chants a 17-15 advantage after one. Blount led the way to the early lead by scoring nine of her 13 points in the first.
The Chants' maintained their two-point cushion through the second quarter as the game went to halftime with Coastal leading 35-33. Blount added four more points in the second period, and Roche came on strong with eight points on a pair of 3-pointers and a mid-range jumper. ULM threatened to overtake the lead several times in the frame, but Coastal held strong to remain in front.
ULM was led by the 13 points of Arsula Clark and 10 points of Whitney Goin. The Warhawks' 36 FG shooting percentage trailed Coastal's 48 percent.
Coastal finishes off its road trip on Saturday when the Chants take on Louisiana at 2 p.m. CT/3 p.m. ET in the Cajundome.
