LITTLE ROCK, ARK. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team earned its fifth-straight win (3-0) on Friday night as they defeated the Little Rock Trojans by the score of 25-9, 25-22, and 25-15. The Chanticleers improve to 15-2 overall and 5-0 in the Sun Belt Conference behind sophomore
Anett Nemeth's 15 kills and a season-high nine team services aces.
Â
Middle hitter
Christina Nance started strong just as she left off in last Saturday's match at Louisiana where she had a hitting percentage of .900 (9-for-10). The redshirt sophomore came out in set one by connecting on her first two swings.
Â
In set one, Coastal had one hitting error on its first five swings to jump out to a 9-4 lead before Little Rock used a timeout to stop the CCU momentum. After the timeout, the Chanticleers used two runs of 5-0 and 6-0 to propel themselves over the final 16 points to cruise to a 25-9 victory.
Â
Nance had five kills on six swings (.833) to lead the Chants to the set one win. As a team, the Chanticleers hit .429 (17-for-35).
Â
In set two, the two teams traded point-for-point, knotting the score at 7-7. At this point, the Chanticleers rattled off five consecutive points on three-straight services aces by the reigning Sun Belt Setter of the Week
Brigitta Petrenko to take a 12-7 advantage.
Â
That advantage didn't last long as LR came right back with five consecutive points of their own. The Trojans got a kill and an ace from Carol Barbosa and used three Chanticleer attack errors to tie the score at 12-12.
Â
Three consecutive points gave the Chants a 15-12 lead. That was the advantage that CCU needed to finish off Little Rock in set two. Sophomore
Anett Nemeth had all four of her set two kills over the last 10 Coastal Carolina points to go on to win 25-22.
Â
Set three saw Coastal Carolina jump out to a 6-1 lead. Nance, Nemeth, and Levanova had one kill apiece and freshman
Jelena Prolic added two aces.
Â
The Trojans sustained the Coastal surge to fight back to take a brief 14-13 lead. Barbosa sparked the run with three of her eight match kills.
Â
Coastal Carolina won the final 12 of 13 points to go on to win the final frame 25-15. Levanova played a vital role over the final 13 points with four of her six set three kills.
Â
Levanova added 12 kills total on the night while Prolic had a match-high four service aces.
Â
Petrenko had a match-high 31 assists. Little Rock had 31 team assists.
Â
The Chanticleers did not allow a Trojan hitter to reach double-digit kills in the win. CCU held LR to a .113 (32 for 115) hitting on the night. Madison Nichols and Barbosa led the home team with eight kills apiece.
Â
Coastal looks to extend their winning streak to six matches as it travels to Arkansas State on Saturday night. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.Â
