Chanticleers Fall to Bobcats on Friday

Coastal Carolina women’s soccer will hit the road next weekend to conclude 2019 regular season

CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team fell to the Texas State Bobcats 2-0 at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Friday evening. With the loss, the Chanticleers record dropped to 5-8-2 overall and 3-4-1 in Sun Belt action while the Bobcats improved to 8-5-2 on the season and 4-2-1 in conference play.

In the opening stanza, Coastal outshot the visitors from Texas State 5-3 while the Bobcats held a 4-1 advantage in corner kick attempts.

The reigning Sun Belt Player of the Year Kaylee Davis put Texas State on the scoreboard with the first goal of the match in the third minute when the senior gathered a Hannah Solano pass at the top of the box for the strike just over the Chanticleer defense.

Mackenzie Gibbs, Sunny Sigurvinsdottir, and Santana Pressley led the first period offensive attack for the Chants. All three attempted a shot trying to find the equalizing goal and forced the Texas State goalkeeper to make three first-half saves.

The Bobcats picked up an insurance goal to make it 2-0 when Jessica Pikoff scored her first goal of the season with a soft lob after catching the Chants defense out of position in the 72nd minute.

Late in the second half, senior Gabby Smychynsky had the best opportunity to put CCU on the scoreboard. Sigurvinsdottir lined up for the corner kick and sent a centering pass to Smychynsky, who headed a shot towards the goal. However, the Bobcats goalkeeper was able to make the save to preserve the shutout.

Coastal would get outshot 12-11 for the match with the trio above being joined by Hannah Miller to get off two shots apiece.

CCU will return to action on Friday, Oct. 25, as it will travel to State University, Ark., to take on Arkansas State. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
