CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team scored two goals in the second half to carry them to a 2-1 victory over the College of Charleston in the Chants final road game of the regular season.
It was a game which saw the Chants control most of the game, but the Cougars scored on their first shot of the game barely six minutes into the match.
Tucker Heffron was able to take a pass from George Maxwell in the middle of the field and find the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead. That would be the lone goal the Cougars would score as the Chants defense took over from there.
Even though CCU had three shots on goal compared to Charleston's single shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes, the Cougars still carried their 1-0 lead into halftime.
After the break the Chants offense continued to put pressure on Charleston's defense and actually took 11 shots in the second half with six of those on goal. But CCU did not score until Antonio LaGamba found a loose ball in front of the net, passed it to
Tyrone Mondi who blasted a shot into the left corner to even the score at one in the 55
th minute.
The two teams battled for 15 more minutes until Coastal's
Emile Rzepecki took advantage of a Charleston mistake on an attempted clear and was able to hit the close-in goal for the eventual game-winner.
Sam Snaith led the Chants on offense with four shots with all four shots on goal. Mondi, LaGamba, Paavo Riihjarvi and
Austin D'Anna all finished with two shots each as the Chants finished the game with 15.
CCU had nine shots on goal while the College of Charleston had one in each half to finish with two.
Alberto Ciroi allowed the only goal early in the match and did not let the Cougars cross the plane of the goal again. Charleston's goalie Austin Shuping kept the Cougars in the game with seven total saves.
CCU will now look to finish the regular season with three consecutive home games and all three will be Sun Belt Conference matches. The first of the three will be Saturday, Oct. 26 when Georgia State comes to Conway. The game was originally scheduled to start at 7 p.m., but has been moved up to a 2 p.m. start.
