CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team will travel to Foley, Ala., on Wednesday, for the Sun Belt Women's Soccer Championships. For the second consecutive year, the Chanticleers will take on Georgia State in the first round of the conference tournament.
Coastal enters the postseason on a two-game winning streak after closing out the season on the road with a 2-1 win over Arkansas State followed by a 1-0 victory over ULM for a 7-8-2 overall record and 5-4-1 record in conference action.
The Chanticleers offense is led by
Sunny Sigurvinsdottir and
Hannah Miller, each tallying six goals apiece on the season while senior
Gabby Smychynsky follows with three goals on the year.
Defensively, the tandem of
Rylee Atteberry and
Ky Hudson have split time between the pipes for CCU to make 56 saves combined.
Mackenzie Cherry and
Kylie Bostick have teamed up on the backline to help allow just 29 goals on the season.
ABOUT GEORGIA STATE
Georgia State enters the conference tournament with an 8-8-2 overall record while finishing conference play with a four-game winning streak to go 5-4-1. Over the final four games, the Panthers allowed just one goal while picking up wins against Louisiana, Texas State, ULM, and Appalachian State.
Jimena Cabrero leads the Georgia State offensive attack with five goals and two assists while Brooke Shank and Liz Fogarty each have tallied three goals apiece.
Defensively, Kendra Clarke has seen the bulk of the action in goal making 37 saves while allowing just 13 goals.
GEORGIA STATE vs. COASTAL ALL-TIME SERIES
The Panthers hold a slight 2-3 advantage in the all-time record against the Chants. In regular season play, each team has captured victories on their home field while Georgia State has the edge on neutral sites.
In the last meeting between the two squads, the Chants picked up a 2-0 victory after Sigurvinsdottir and Miller each scored their fifth goal of the season. Sigurvinsdottir scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 77th minute unassisted to take the team lead in goals scored. Miller answered with the insurance goal to tie the Selfoss, Iceland native, in the 81st minute for the final tally of 2-0.
