Coastal Defeats Gardner-Webb in Home Opener

CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team won its season home opener on Friday afternoon, defeating Gardner-Webb 4-3 at the Stevens Tennis Complex.
GWU (0-2) won the doubles point and first singles point, but Coastal (1-1) rallied back with four straight singles wins to claim its first victory of the season.
GWU won the No. 1 doubles match before Daiki Tanabe and Gonzalo Achondo evened the point with a 7-5 win at No. 2. GWU clinched the point with a 6-3 win at No. 2.
The Runnin' Bulldogs took a 2-0 match lead after Maximilian Scholl won by Luiz Faria's retirement at No. 1.
Coastal's comeback started with Pyry Hyrkkoen's straight-sets win at No. 4. Gonzalo Achondo followed with a straight-sets win at No. 5 to even the match and Tanabe gave Coastal its first lead of the day with a three-set win at No. 6.
Joel Popov provided the match-winning point at No. 3, defeating Breno Plentz in three sets.
GWU won at No. 2 singles to finish the match.
"GWU always brings intensity and credit to them for taking a close doubles point," said head coach Chris Powers. "I'm really proud of how we responded in singles, especially when Luiz had to retire. It is great to see us defending our home courts again and I look forward to building off this win today."
Coastal has a week off of action before hosting South Carolina State for a 1 p.m. match on Feb. 8 at the Stevens Tennis Complex.
