WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team lost a pair of matches Saturday afternoon, falling 4-1 to Florida Gulf Coast and 5-0 to College of Charleston in the first day of action at the UNCW Dig & Dive Classic.
 
Coastal drops to 10-7 overall, and will close the weekend with a pair of matches on Sunday against Carson-Newman and UNCW.
 
Match 1: FGCU 4 – Coastal 1
Coastal's first match of the day saw the Chants' 5's win the only point of the contest.
 
After falling 19-21 in the first set, Kalin Eske and Anett Nemeth rallied for a 21-13 win in the second before ultimately defeating Cortney VanLiew/Emma Hanson, 16-14, in the third.
 
FGCU claimed the remaining four courts, including courts one and three in straight sets.
 
Lucy Campbell and Anaiah Boyer won the first set on court two before falling in extras in the second set. The CCU duo then fell 15-10 in the third.
 
At No. 4, Tanner Gauthier and Kate Federico split the first two sets with Giovanna Borgiotti/Candace Lacour, but fell in the third, 15-10.
 
Match 2: CofC 5 – Coastal 0
College of Charleston won all five courts in the second match of the day, including sweeps of courts two, three, four and five.
 
Leah Hardmean and Sydney Alvis won the opening set on the first court, 21-17, but lost the second set by the same score. CofC's top pairing of Lauren Freed/Kennedy Madison claimed the third set, 15-13.
