CONWAY – Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team heads back out on the road, Wednesday, March 6, as they will travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to take on Big South member Winthrop. The opening draw is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
The Chanticleers (2-1) will look for their first-ever victory (0-7) over the Eagles 0-6 as Winthrop holds a 7-0 advantage in the overall series.
Coastal Carolina opened the season with sandwiching a road loss to No. 7 Syracuse (Feb. 18) with two victories at home over Old Dominion (Feb. 9) and Campbell (Feb. 20).
Last season, Winthrop pulled out a 16-14 victory on the teal turf at Brooks Stadium. The Chants were led on offense by
Madeline Bromley (1 goal and 6 assists) with seven points and
Haley Alexander (4 goals) with four points, while the Eagles lost all of their scorers from that game.
The aforementioned duo of Alexander (10 goals and 5 assists) and Bromley (7 goals and 4 assists) are the leading point scorers for CCU with 15 and 11 respectively, while the offense is averaging 13.33 goals per game. Defensively, the Chants, who are allowing 10.67 goals per game, are anchored by goalkeeper
Harley Barrett with 24 saves and
Emily D'Orsaneo who has caused six turnovers and collected eight ground balls.
The last time out for Coastal, the defense allowed just four goals with Barrett making eight saves on the day. On offense, the Chanticleers had a hat trick of hat tricks when Alexander (4 goals and 2 assists), Bromley (3 goals and 3 assists) were joined by
Samantha Courtemanche (4 goals and 2 assists) to put Coastal back in the win column with a 16-4 win over the Campbell.
Winthrop offense, which is averaging 7.67 goals per game, is led by Lauren Morris (12 goals and 5 assists) and Mia Creighton (11 goals and 1 assist), while the defense, which is allowing 14.17 goals per game, is held down by goalkeeper Alaina Girani with 61 saves and Mackenzie Cunningham who has caused eight turnovers and scooped seven ground balls.
The Eagles hosted Kennesaw State on Saturday, March 2, with the Owls winning 16-11. Creighton (4 goals on 7 shots) and McKenna Blick (3 goals on 7 shots) led Winthrop's offense with seven of the 11 goals. While on the defensive end Blick and Emily Torris both caused two turnovers each.
