Men’s Golf Tied for First After Day One at 2019 Sun Belt Championship

Coastal Carolina men’s carded its second-lowest team round of the year on Sunday
Sandestin, Fla. – Coastal Carolina men's golf carded a round of 278, -6 under par, over the first round of play on Sunday to sit in a tie for first-place overall on the team leaderboard after day one at the 2019 Sun Belt Championship at the Raven Golf Club in Sandestin, Fla.
The Chanticleers' round of 278 is the second-lowest 18-hole team score for Coastal on the season and tied for the seventh-lowest team round in CCU history.
The Chants are tied atop of the leaderboard with Little Rock (278, -6) and one stroke ahead of Georgia Southern (279, -5). No. 28 Arkansas State (281, -3) is in fourth-place, while Texas State, UT Arlington, Georgia State and ULM are all tied for fifth at 282, -2 under par.
"We had a steady day today. We left a lot out there for sure. The setup was very generous and I'm honestly surprised scores weren't lower across the board," stated head coach Jim Garren. "We did our job today and just need to continue to try and be a low round each day."
Leading the Chants on day one of the championships was Wes Artac with his team-low score of 67, -4 under par. Artac totaled six birdies and 10 pars over his first 18 holes of play, carding a 32, -3 under par, on the front nine and a 35, -1 under par, on the back nine to end the day tied for second overall on the individual leaderboard.
Also in the 60's on Sunday was junior States Fort with his first round 69, -2 under par, which placed him in a tie for seventh overall after one day of play. Fort totaled four birdies and 12 pars over his first round, shooting -1 under on both the front and back nine on the day.
"Solid rounds by Wes and States today. Wes had a big bogey save on 17 after hitting it out of bounds off the tee, that should help carry momentum over into tomorrow," Garren continued.
Shooting a 71, even par, and placing in a tie for 24th overall was both Zack Taylor and Luis Ruiz. Taylor turned in four birdies, including three on the front nine, while Ruiz matched Taylor's four birdies overall, including three on the back nine.
Rounding out the lineup for CCU was senior Morgan Deneen with his first round 73, +2. Deneen had an up-and-down round that saw four birdies, nine pars, four bogeys and a double-bogey that placed him in a tie for 36th overall.
The Chants will tee off day two of the 2019 Sun Belt Championship on Monday, April 22, at 8:15 a.m. CT. Coastal will start on the back nine to begin the round and once again will be playing with No. 28 Arkansas State and Georgia Southern.
