Coastal Carolina men’s golf fell to No. 28 Arkansas State in match play at the Sun Belt Championship
Sandestin, Fla. – Coastal Carolina men's golf saw its chance to repeat as Sun Belt Conference Champions end on Wednesday morning, as the Chanticleers fell to the No. 28-nationally ranked Arkansas State Red Wolves 3-2 in the semifinals of match play at the 2019 Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship at the Raven Golf Club in Sandestin, Fla.
Senior Wes Artac posted a 2&1 win over Julien Sale of Arkansas State, while junior States Fort finished 1UP over Joel Wendin.
Starting on hole No. 10, Artac went up one by winning the first hole then saw the match go back to all square on hole No. 13. The graduate transfer then fell behind by dropping hole No. 15 and trailed over the next three holes before evening the match back up at the first hole on the front nine.
The Texas native then retook the advantage in the head-to-head match with a win on hole No. 3 and then sealed the 2&1 victory with a win on hole No. 7 and a draw on No. 8.
Fort's match went all 18 holes, as the third-year Chant earned the 1UP when despite trailing most of the round. He fell behind right out of the gate by dropping hole No. 10, the first hole of the day, before putting the match back at all square on the very next hole.
After falling behind by one again on No. 13, Fort put the match back all square on No. 17 only to see Wendin retake the lead advantage on hole No. 18 after nine holes of play.
Fort would trail over the next several holes until taking hole No. 5 to put the match back all square with four holes to play. The junior would earn the 1UP win by sinking a putt on No. 9, his 18th hole of the day, to give the Chants two head-to-head victories.
Both Zack Taylor and Morgan Deneen, who posted top-10 finishes in the stroke play portion of the championship, both dropped their matches 4&2, while senior Luis Ruiz lost 1UP on Wednesday.
Taylor fell behind by two on the very first two holes of the head-to-head match and battled back to put the bout back at all square with wins on hole No. 14 and 15. However, A-State's Zan Luka Stirn would regain the advantage with a win on hole No. 16 and lead the rest of the way before winning the match on hole No. 7 on the front nine with two to play.
Deneen took an early match advantage after the first hole of play and kept the match all square for most of the first 10 holes before dropping four of the next six holes to fall 4&2 to the Red Wolves' Matthew Cole.
Ruiz was never in front and trailed for most of his match with A-State's Luke Naglic, battling back to put the match all square three separate times before dropping the 17th hole of the day, hole No. 8, in the 1UP loss.
The Chanticleers will now wait until the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship selections on May 1 to see if their 2019 season will continue at an NCAA Regional. Eighty-one teams and 45 individuals will be selected to compete at one of six regional championship sites from May 13-15.
