CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina softball team dropped to 29-11 overall on the season after a 9-0 loss at North Carolina on Tuesday afternoon at Anderson Stadium.
UNC's Brittany Pickett pitched her 15th win of the season and added a home run on the day.
In the bottom of the first, with two on and two out, Pickett took CCU starter Ashley Guillette's 3-2 pitch over the center field fence to give her team the 3-0 lead.
North Carolina added four more runs in the bottom of the second as Abby Settlemyre and Destiny DeBerry set the table by getting on with a couple of singles and stealing second base. With one out, and following the third single of the inning by Leah Murray, centerfielder Kristina Burkhart capped off the rally as she connected with a two-run homer to extend the lead to 7-0, consequently knocking out the CCU starter Ashley Guillette.
Down 9-0 in the fourth, Coastal's Courtney Dean added the second and final Chanticleer hit of the day with a lead-off double down the left field line, but the CCU bats couldn't find a way to bring her around to score.
The Heels turned it over to reliever Hannah Nommensen in the fifth inning to complete the victory.
UNC improved to 23-13 on the year as Pickett collected the win in four innings of work with five strikeouts.
Guillette took the loss for Coastal and dropped to 10-5. The senior had her second-shortest start of the season by going 1.1 innings and allowed seven runs on the day.
Murray led North Carolina at the plate as she went 2-for-3.
The Chanticleers are back in action as they battle at for fourth-place against the Texas State Bobcats, starting Friday at 4:00 p.m. at St. John Stadium.
