Black Tennis History Regional Legends (2014-19)
CONWAY – Lonnie White, assistant coach for the Coastal Carolina men's tennis team, has been named a 2019 Regional Legend by Black Tennis History, it was announced this week.
Black Tennis History's Regional Legends are individuals that have committed their lives to enriching tennis in their communities and deserve to have their accomplishments acknowledged and illuminated for the world to see.
As a player, White has won at least 40 A.T.A titles (singles, doubles and mixed doubles) since 1997. He has won several USTA, District and Southern championships. In 1997, he was a member of a USTA 5.0 National Championship team. White has been number one in the 35's, 40's, 45's, 50's and 55's division singles in the Georgia Section. He was a high school state champion in high school and, while at Grambling State, was member of a SWAC championship team.
White has dedicated his life to promoting tennis throughout the country. In Moultrie, Ga., where he grew up, White worked with the Boy's and Girl's Club to give free tennis lessons. In Augusta, Ga., White worked with MACH Academy taking students to tournament all around the country. More than 20 of those students went on to play collegiate tennis.
White coached at Albany State University prior to joining the Chants as an assistant coach for the 2019 season. He was instrumental in Coastal's turnaround from a 6-15 team in 2018 to a 16-8 team in 2019. The Chants also placed third in the Sun Belt with a 5-2 conference record, and won eight of nine home matches played at the Stevens Tennis Complex.
