Coastal Defeats Georgia Southern 2-1 To Advance In Sun Belt Tournament

Highlights

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (36-19) will move on to Wednesday's winners' bracket round of the 2019 Sun Belt Tournament as they defeated the Georgia Southern Eagles (23-28) on Wednesday morning by the score of 2-1 with the help of a complete game victory from 2019 Second-Team All-Sun Belt selection Kaitlin Beasley-Polko.

In the bottom of the second, Georgia Southern starter Kaylee Ramos got herself into trouble as she surrendered a leadoff walk to Chanticleer freshman Abbey Montoya. The next batter, senior Alexis Alvino laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Eagle second baseman Ashlynn Gunter was unable to make the catch from catcher Logan Harrell as it resulted in Montoya moving to third base on the muffed throw.

With Chanticleer freshman Sydney Guess at the plate, CCU would execute a double steal on the ensuing play with Alvino and Montoya.  Harrell threw down to shortstop Macy Coleman, but the Coleman relay back to the catcher was just a bit high and allowed Montoya to slide safely under the tag to give the Chanticleers a 1-0 lead after two innings of play.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, senior Chelsea D'Avilar hit her fifth home run of the season as it gave the Chanticleers an insurance run to go up by the score of 2-0.

The insurance paid off for the Chants, as in the top of the seventh Coastal starter Beasley-Polko would give up a one-out solo home run to Macy Coleman to cut the lead in half at 2-1. The Leonardtown, Md., native would go on to get the final two outs of the game for the victory.

Beasley-Polko improved to 22-12 on the season as she pitched seven innings, gave up one run on four hits, and struck out five Eagle batters.

D'Avilar went 2-for-3 on the day with a home run and an RBI.

The Chants will play later on Wednesday against number three seed UT Arlington with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
