Coastal Carolina men’s golf has now had five All-America scholars over the last two years
Norman, Okla. – Coastal Carolina men's golf had two student-athletes in Morgan Deneen and States Fort named 2018-19 Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced today.
Deneen, who graduated in December 2018 with a bachelor's degree in the PGA Golf Management Program, is now a two-time GCAA All-America Scholar having earned the national academic honor in 2017-18. Deneen teed-off in eight tournaments for the Chants in 2018-19. The 2017-18 Sun Belt Championship individual champion and Newcomer of the year posted a stroke average of 74.08 over 24 rounds of play last season. He totaled six rounds of par or better, including a season-low round of 64 in the final round of play at the 2019 Sun Belt Championship. He also carded a round of 68 over the first round of play at the Florida Gators Invitational and a 69 in the second round at the Sun Belt Championship. Deneen turned in a seventh-place finish at the 2019 Sun Belt Championship with rounds of 73, 69 and 64 for a 54-hole score of 206, -7 under par, which was tied for the sixth-lowest 54-hole tournament score in CCU history.
Fort, who made the President's List for the second time in his collegiate career in the 2019 spring semester, competed in 10 events for the Chants in 2018-19. He posted a 74.10 stroke average over 30 rounds of play, which included 11 rounds or better, which ranked third on the team. The rising senior posted four rounds in the 60's on the season, including a low 68 twice, first at the Maridoe Intercollegiate in the fall and then again at the Mason Rudolph Championship in the spring. Fort also turned in a first-round 69 at the 2019 Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship in which he finished in a tie for 15th overall with a 54-hole score of 210, -3 under par, (69-71-70) at the 2019 Sun Belt Championship. In match play, he posted a 1UP win over Joel Wendin of Arkansas State in the semifinals of match play at the Sun Belt Championship.
Recognized as a GCAA All-Academic team for the 2018-19 season last week, the Chants have had five All-America Scholars over the last two years under head coach Jim Garren.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically in Division I, II, III, and NAIA, or receiving their Associate's Degree and in their last year of athletic eligibility in the NJCAA. In addition, must have participated in at least 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 78.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, 77.0 in NJCAA, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
