CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team completed an outstanding opening weekend to the 2019 season on Saturday as the Chanticleers swept Furman (25-23, 25-23, 25-19) and Virginia (25-18, 25-22,25-16) to close out the Cavalier Classic hosted by UVA.
Coastal swept all three of its matches in the tournament to start the season 3-0, and will make its home debut next weekend during the Coastal Carolina Classic, set for Sept. 6-7 at the HTC Center.
Junior outside hitter
Ani Bozdeva and freshman defensive specialist
Lina Perugini were named to the Cavalier Classic All-Tournament Team, while freshman
Brigitta Petrenko was named Tournament MVP.
Bozdeva led Coastal this weekend averaging 6.33 kills per set and 2.33 blocks per set, and ranked second for the Chants in digs per set with 3.67. Perugini was the team's digs leader, averaging 5.88 per set in her first three career matches. Petrenko dished out 102 assists over nine sets for an average of 11.33, and led Coastal with four service aces.
Game 1: Coastal 3 – Furman 0
Coastal won the first two sets by identical 25-23 scores, and finished off the match in the third with a 25-19 victory.
The Chants hit .286 to Furman's .160, and were led by the 14 kills and 10 kills of
Mariia Levanova and
Kyla Manning, respectively.
Following her 36-assist performance in Friday's win over Loyola Maryland, Petrenko dished out a match-leading 35 assists.
Perugini also recorded a match high for the Chants with 17 digs.
Game 2: Coastal 3 – Virginia 0
The final match of the weekend featured another strong performance for the Chants as they held Virginia below 20 points in the first and third sets, and won the second set 25-22.
Tied 17-17 late in the first set, Levanova landed a kill to put Coastal in front and the Chants won seven of the next eight points to take a 1-0 match lead. Coastal banked an early lead in the second set thanks to a 9-2 run and stayed in front for the remainder of the game to go ahead 2-0. The final set included a 9-1 run early in the frame and a 6-1 stretch later on en route to a nine-point set victory.
Levanova had a match high of 12 kills while hitting .579. Manning wasn't far behind as the junior landed 11 kills.
Petrenko recorded her first Coastal double-double with 31 assists and 10 digs.
Ilse Sinnige and Perugini also had match highs with six blocks and 15 digs, respectively.
