CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker in the final minutes of regulation to the Georgia Southern Eagles on Friday night at the CCU Soccer Stadium. With the loss, the Chants fall to 2-5-1 overall and 0-1-0 in Sun Belt action while the Eagles improve to 4-4-0, 1-0-0 on the season.
The Chanticleers held a 12-11 advantage in shots but were unable to beat the defense of the visitors. Junior
Mackenzie Gibbs led the offensive attack with three shots.
The first half remained scoreless with Coastal attempting seven shots to GSU's three with CCU being aggressive and spending 47 percent of the opening frame in the attacking half of the field.
Georgia Southern reversed the tide in the second period attacking the ball and outshot the Chants eight to five with the game-winning goal coming in the 89th minute. Brooke Barrett intercepted a pass and caught the defense on its heels for the tally in the closing minutes of the contest.
Coastal Carolina will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 22 as the Chants will host Troy. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
