Chanticleers Pickup First Conference Win

Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team remains unbeaten against Troy

CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team picked up a 2-1 victory over Troy Sunday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Stadium in Conway. The win improved the Chants record to 3-5-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play while the Trojans fell to 5-2-3 and 0-1-1 in the Sun Belt.
 
Two days after dropping its conference home opener to Georgia Southern, CCU picked up its first conference win of the 2019 season on goals by Mackenzie Gibbs and Gabby Smychynsky to improve to .500 in Sun Belt play.
 
After a called handball in the box against Troy in the 34th minute, Gibbs stepped up to the ball and fired a low ground ball past the visiting goalkeeper who guessed to her left while the ball went to the right for the 1-0 Chanticleer score.
 
The Trojans answered a minute later when Kendra Cashion scored her second goal of the season to even the match up at 1-1. Cashion dribbled the ball down the right-wing and fired a knuckleball just over the outstretched arms of the CCU goalie.
 
At the 60th minute, the officials called for the first of two hydration breaks in the second half with the heat bearing down on the field. Troy showed poise and attacked the Coastal defense trying to put them on their heels to get the go-ahead tally early in the second period.
 
Late in the second stanza, Callie Hawkins sent a crossing pass off a corner kick to the front of the goal where Smychynsky headed the ball down to the lower right section of the goal for the eventual game-winner.
 
Newcomer Ky Hudson picked up her first win in goal making two first-half saves. Overall, the Chanticleer offense outshot the Trojans 13-7 and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
 
Coastal Carolina will return to action as they will host Appalachian State on Thursday, Sept. 26 at the CCU Soccer Stadium. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
