Sunny Sigurvinsdottir scored twice in the first half to lead the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Jacksonville on Friday evening at Eagle Field on the campus of Winthrop University. The match was moved because the Coastal Carolina University campus was closed to Hurricane Dorian hitting the eastern shoreline.
The win improved the Chants record to 1-4 on the season while the Dolphins dropped to 0-4 to remain winless.
With just 38 seconds into the match, sophomore defender
Mackenzie Cherry fired a pass from the Chanticleer end to a streaking Sigurvinsdottir, who made a slight faint to the left and sent a shot by the JU goalkeeper for her first goal of the season.
The Selfoss, Iceland native, added her second goal on the season in the 19th minute when freshman
Lauren Denning found her streaking past the defense on the left side of the box to increase the Coastal lead to 2-0, where it stayed until after the intermission.
Jacksonville's Olivia Abdallah picked up her second goal of the year to cut the CCU lead in half at 2-1 off an assist from Kylie McCue in the 53rd minute.
Freshman
Megan Brouse scored her first career goal in the 83rd minute when junior
Mackenzie Gibbs sent a long ball over the head of everyone but the Dolphin goalkeeper. Brouse beat the JU goalkeeper to the ball, tapping it by the last JU defender and putting it in from the left side next to the goal post for the final score of 3-1.
Offensively, the Chanticleers outshot the Dolphins 24-6 with Sigurvinsdottir and senior
Hannah Miller getting six shots each. The young CCU squad also controlled the ball 63 percent of the 90 minutes.
Coastal Carolina will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 8, as it will travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on former Big South opponent Gardner-Webb. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
