Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team wins second straight after 3-1 victory
Boiling Springs, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team toppled former Big South foe Gardner-Webb 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in Boiling Springs, N.C. The Chanticleers improved to 2-4-0 on the season while the Runnin' Bulldogs remain winless at 0-5-1.
The opening stanza saw each team taking almost the same amount of shots, Coastal 6 and GWU 5. Senior Hannah Miller started the scoring getting the first goal of the match off an assist from Lauren Denning for the 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
The Runnin' Bulldogs answered in the 29th minute. Stina Kleppe sent a corner kick to the center of the box, and Emily Jonas fired a shot to the Chanticleer's goalkeepers left side to even the match at 1-1, where the score remained even at the intermission.
After the break, Coastal grabbed the lead when sophomore Loranna Austin sent a crossing pass from the end line to freshman Megan Brouse for the 2-1 lead. Brouse kneed the pass by the defender in the 58th minute to the right side of the goal.
Sigurvinsdottir made it 3-1 in the 68th minute with her third goal of the season just inside the box off passes from Mackenzie Gibbs and Brouse. The Selfoss, Iceland native danced around the defender and fired a shot to the back of the right side of the net.
Offensively, Coastal Carolina outshot the hosts 15-14 with Miller and Austin each getting off three shots each.
The Chanticleers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 15 as they will host Richmond in Conway at the CCU Soccer Stadium. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
