LYNCHBURG, VA. – The Coastal Carolina field event athletes were featured on Friday, part of the first day at the Liberty Kickoff.
Sophomore Katie Bond was able to tie her personal best of 3.05 meters in the pole vault event, good for 19th-place. At last weekend's Gamecock Opener, the Shamokin Dam, Pa., native bested her old mark by .15 meters (2.90 meters) that she achieved at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships last February.
Rachel Milnes of the host, Liberty Flames took the win in the event as she reached a height of 3.65 meters.
Just like a week ago, the Chanticleers featured three freshmen in the weight throw competition.
Ty-Layshia West earned a top 20 finish with her best throw of the day at 13.99 meters. The Batesburg-Leesville High School graduate improved her personal best by 1.20 meters from last week's Gamecock Gamecock Opener. Shareya Newsome also improved her personal best, as she would go on to eclipse her mark by 2.40 meters (11.77 meters). Rounding out the Coastal throwers was Kacey Lombard. The Toms River, N.J., newcomer would mark her best throw of the day at 8.37 meters.
Unattached thrower Jocelyn Williams earned first-place in the weight throw as she threw a meet-best 19.41 meters.
On Saturday, the Liberty Kickoff will have the final field events start at 9:30 a.m. with the women's long jump and all the track events, ending with the women's 3000 meters at 5:55 p.m.
