COLUMBIA, S.C. – On Friday, the Chanticleer indoor track and field team completed the first day of the Carolina Challenge where five personal records were broken on the day.
In the track events, no CCU runner was able to make it to the finals of the 60-meter dash, but freshman Madison Jones was able to mark a personal best as she ran 8.06, .03 seconds better than last week's result at the Liberty Kickoff.
Fellow freshman Melissa Jefferson is coming off the Sun Belt Women's Track Athlete of the Week as she ran 7.55 last week in Lexington, but the Georgetown, S.C., native followed it up on Friday with a time of 7.62.
In the 400 meters, freshman Tariney Pepper also completed a personal best in the respective event for a time of 59.67. To open up the season, the Simpsonville, S.C., native has improved her time each of the first three weeks of the season.
Distance runner Ashley Rulison is coming off a strong first season on the cross country team to compete in her first event on the track in 2020. The Burton, Ohio native finished 27th out of 60 runners in the 3000 meters for a time of 10:57.35.
Freshman Camryn Luyckx and sophomore Kelsia Moore led the Chants in the field events on Friday with two more personal bests broken on the day.
Luyckx improved her personal best distance in the long jump by .23 meters, from 4.74 to 4.97 meters, good for 29th out of 50 runners.
Moore's mark of 11.29 meters in the triple jump was .32 meters better than last week's 10.97-meter finish at the Liberty Kickoff.
In the shot put, Shareya Newsome added a top 20 performance with a throw of 11.09 meters, good for 16th out of 52 athletes. Teammate Kacey Lombard finished in 38-place with a throw of 9.37 meters.
The two freshmen also competed in the weight throw beside fellow Chanticleer Ty-Layshia West.
West led the Chants in the event with a toss of 13.03 meters and placed 16th out of 43 athletes. Newsome and Lombard followed behind in 26th and 31st-place with throws of 11.52 and 10.54 meters, respectively.
Day two of the Carolina Challenge will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the women's high jump and will conclude with the women's 4x400 meters schedule for 5:50 p.m.
