CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team could not overcome the aggressive Panthers of Georgia State, falling 2-1 in overtime on a hot and humid Sunday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
GSU (6-1-1 / 5-1-1 SBC) were the aggressors from the beginning as the visitors out shot CCU (4-2 / 4-2 SBC) 13-4 in the first half alone and finished the match with a 17-10 shots advantage, including 12-6 edge in shots on goal.
The Panthers led 1-0 at halftime on a Maddie Johnston goal in the 36th minute. Kelsee Holloway picked up the assist for the visitors.
The game stayed that way until four minutes left in the match when
Mackenzie Gibbs was able to get a header in past GSU goalie Jaddah Foos to even the score at one.
Loranna Austin had the assist.
In the first overtime, both teams had good looks at the goal, but it was a shot from 30 yards out from Jolie Ryff that got past Coastal goalkeeper
Ky Hudson for the match-winner with only 1:08 left in the first overtime period.
Hudson had another outstanding game in the net for CCU, finishing with 10 saves. This career-high came on the heels of her old career-high of nine in CCU's last outing, a win at Georgia Southern. Her saves total was tied for the 10th-most saves in a single game in CCU history.
CCU will be on the road for its' next three matches, beginning with an Oct. 16 match against South Alabama, a team that beat CCU 4-3 on a penalty kick with five minutes left in the match earlier this season.
