CONWAY – Coastal Carolina University women's golf coach Katie Quinney has announced the addition of three players to the 2020-21 roster.
Â
Maika Llarena comes to the Chanticleers from Puebla, Mexico. She is a highly skilled player that will add some quality depth to the program.
Â
"Maika is a strong, athletic player coming to us from Mexico", Quinney said. "I was immediately impressed with her attitude, love for competition, and drive to get better and surround herself with great players. She has a great opportunity to spend this fall on campus getting acclimated and working hard towards her individual goals and our team goals for the spring season."
Â
Nicole Abelar is another international player that has a strong background in international play. She began winning championships at a young age. She won the FCG San Diego Junior Masters in 2009 and finished fifth at the 2009 IMG Junior World Championship.
Â
In 2016 she had third-place finishes at the IJGA World Stars of Junior Golf and the 2018 Philippine Junior Amateur Open. She also won the Canluban Amateur Open in both 2018 and 2019.
Â
"Nicole and I began speaking right after our season was cut short in March", Quinney said. "She has been an overwhelmingly enthusiastic Chanticleer from the beginning! She has been in a gap year and can't get to campus soon enough to begin her college career. We can't wait to welcome Nicole to the Coastal golf family in January."
Â
The third signee is Madilyn Zimmerman, who hails from Johns Creek, Ga. She is joining the team from the CCU PGM program and has worked her way on to the roster.
Â
She helped lead Johns Creek High School to state titles in 2017 and 2019 while being an all-state honorable mention honoree in 2017.
Â
"Madilyn has been on campus for one year already as a member of our PGM program. Since high school, Madilyn and I have discussed her opportunities of doing both PGM and being an active member of our golf team. Last year, she showed a tremendous ability to manage time, make great grades, and continue to improve her golf game. It was my honor and pleasure to add Madilyn to our roster this season."
Â
The Chants will play a limited number of matches this fall with all on the roster playing as individuals. The fall season starts Oct. 19-21 at the Callaway Gardens Invitational. The event will be played at the Callaway Gardens Resort in Pine Mountain, Ga.
