BOONE, N.C. –
The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Sunday afternoon, as an own goal in the 88th minute proved to be the difference in the Sun Belt contest in Boone, N.C.

In the 88th minute of the scoreless match, the Mountaineers played a ball from the right side of the box towards an open player streaking into the box from the left side. A CCU defender attempted to cut off the pass but the ball hit off her foot and directly into the net to give the Mountaineers the 1-0 lead.

Coastal totaled 10 shots for the match, putting six on goal but couldn't get one past App State goalkeeper Kerry Eagleston in the 90-minute contest.

Mackenzie Gibbs led the Chants' attack with four shots, including two on goal, while Megan Brouse fired off three shots, also putting two on target.

CCU's Sunny Sigurvinsdottir, Taylor Tolson, and Loranna Austin each had a shot attempt for the match.

Appalachian State registered 12 shots with three on goal in the win.

Coastal goalkeeper Ky Hudson registered three saves while facing 12 shot attempts in goal for the Chants, yet suffered the loss on the day.

The Chants opened up the contest as the aggressor, as Sigurvinsdottir, Austin, and Gibbs each lined up a shot in the first six minutes only to see one get saved and two sail high of the net to keep the match scoreless early.

CCU's best scoring chance of the match came in the 17th minute as an App State foul in the box set up a penalty kick for the visiting Chants. However, Brouse's attempt to the low right corner of the goal was blocked by a diving Eagleston to keep the Chants off the scoreboard.

Following a save by Hudson in the 21st minute, Tolson placed a shot on frame in the 23rd minute only to again have Eagleston come up with the save.

The two teams would each register two shots apiece over the final 20 minutes of the opening half with neither team able to find the back of the net to take the lead.

The Mountaineers looked to take the lead early in the second half on back-to-back shots from Mary Perkins and Hayley Boyles in the 48th minute only to have both shots fly off target.

Gibbs again just missed right on a shot in the 53rd minute, while Eagleston stopped two-straight shots from Gibbs and Brouse in the 68th and 69th minutes, respectively.

The next four shots of the match would come from the feet of the Mountaineers with Hudson picking up a save in the 75th minute to keep the match at 0-0.
