CONWAY, S.C. – It was fitting for a senior to pick up the match-winner on Senior Day, as
Mackenzie Gibbs scored with less than a minute remaining in the second overtime period to give Coastal Carolina a 1-0 Sun Belt Conference win over Appalachian State on Sunday at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
It was Gibbs' second goal of the season and eighth of her career. It was the second match winning goal of her career.
Both teams had traded blows throughout the 109 minutes of action and both teams were tired, but the Chants found a seam up the middle of the field as junior
Mackenzie Cherry made a pass which Gibbs was able to gather on the left side of the box. Her left-footed shot went just outside the reach of App State's goalie Kerry Eagleston, where it tipped off the right post and into the back of the net for the winner with 44 seconds left on the clock.
CCU (3-1/3-1 SBC) outshot the visitors 12-8 and both teams had five shots on goal. Both goalies had superb stops during play, with Eagleston finishing with four saves and CCU's
Ky Hudson finishing with five, while picking up her second shutout of the season.
The Chants will hit the road for their next match when they travel to Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern. The match is schedule for Thursday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m.
