Orangeburg, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis won its fourth-straight match with a 4-3 win over in-state foe South Carolina State in Orangeburg, S.C. on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Chanticleers improved to 4-1 on the year while the Bulldogs fell to 1-2 on the season.
The Chants opened the scoring getting the doubles point, as the teams of
Zak Talic and
Joel Popov and
Daiki Tanabe and
Francesco Cori registered wins on courts No. 1 and No. 3. Talic and Popov defeated Aleksa Daskalovic and Macelo Rodriguez 6-1 while Tanabe and Cori downed Selim Ben Ali and Geraldo Bonifacio by a 6-2 score. The match on court No. 2 would go unfinished.
In singles play, Talic,
Gonzalo Achondo, and Tanabe would all win in straight sets to give Coastal all the points needed to claim the match win. On court No. 1, Talic defeated Daskalovic 6-2, 6-1 while Tanabe dropping Omar Gorgun 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 to give the Chants a 3-0 lead.
The Bulldogs followed with victories on courts No. 5 and No. 2 to pull within one point at 3-2 before Achondo clinched the match for CCU by beating Antoine Gbadoe 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3 just before South Carolina State secured its final point.
Coastal Carolina returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 29, as the Chants travel to Durham, N.C. to take on the Duke Blue Devils. The first serve is scheduled for Noon ET.
