Chanticleers Defeat Texas State 69-59 in Fiery Conference Clash

Coastal Carolina improved to 18-3 on the season with the victory

San Marcos, Texas – Senior Naheria Hamilton recorded her fourth-straight double-double to lead the Coastal Carolina women's basketball team to a 69-59 victory over the Texas State Bobcats on Thursday night in San Marcos, Texas. With the win, the Chanticleers improved to 18-3 on the season and 8-2 in the Sun Belt while the Bobcats fell to 8-13 overall and 1-9 in the conference.

The heated contest saw 48 called fouls, five technical fouls, and two ejections, one for each team.

CCU's Hamilton led the team with 18 points and 14 rebounds while senior guard DJ Williams scored 10 of her 15 points in the second half to keep Texas State at bay in the road conference win.

The Bobcats had three players in double figures with Da'Nasia Hood getting 18 points while guards Kennedy Taylor and Brooke Holle recorded 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Coastal point guard Torrie Cash (9 points and 5 assists) opened the game with a drive to the basket, drawing a foul on the home team for an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Chanticleers out in front with an 3-0 early lead.

Texas State bounced back to take its only lead of the contest when Avionne Alexander made her only basket of the game to put the host up 7-5 in the first quarter.

Hamilton took over in the paint going 4-of-5 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line to record 12 points as Coastal took advantage at the end of the first quarter at 22-14.

Both squads struggled from the field in the second quarter as Coastal shot just 3-of-12 from the field while the Bobcats were only  3-of-16, allowing the Chanticleers to take a 33-25 lead at the intermission.

The Chants opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 14-point lead at 39-25, forcing the home team to call a timeout just two minutes into the second half of play. Junior reserve Zacharyia Esmon would knock down a three-pointer from long range to give Coastal its largest lead of the game at 54-38 with 1:15 remaining in the third quarter.

Texas State opened the final quarter with a 9-1 run with Taylor getting to the basket for six of her points and Hood hitting a three-pointer. The Bobcats would pull to within six at 58-52 with 7:15 remaining on a shot from behind the arc by Holle.

CCU's junior guard Tiarra Davis answered with a trifecta of her own to stop the momentum and put the Chants back in front by nine at 61-52.

Twice in the final five minutes of the contest, the Bobcats closed the gap to within five with the final time being on a Chelsea Johnson jumper just outside the paint with 1:34 remaining in the game.

Coastal's Cash and Williams went 4-of-4 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the road win for the Chants.

The Chants will head to Arlington, Texas to face UT Arlington on Saturday, Feb. 8. The tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
