Jefferson Picks Up Two Season-Ending Awards

NEW ORLEANS, LA. – On Thursday, Coastal Carolina track and field athlete Melissa Jefferson was voted by the coaches as the Sun Belt's Most Outstanding Freshman and Newcomer of the Year during the 2020 indoor track and season, announced by the conference on Thursday.
Jefferson became the first Chanticleer, since 2018, to earn an all-conference honor. The Georgetown, S.C., native highlighted this past season with a second-place finish in the 200 meters at the 2020 Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships, finishing seven-hundredths shy of her personal best time.
Earlier in the season at the Liberty Invitational, Jefferson picked up a win in the 60-meter dash as she marked a time of 7.55, good for fifth all-time in school history. It was the first time since 2013 that a Coastal Carolina sprinter earned a win in the 60 meters since CCU Hall of Famer Erica Peake took the win at the Virginia Tech Qualifier. Later that day, the Georgetown, S.C., native had a strong showing in the 200 meters where she picked up a second-place finish a personal best time of 24.87, good for 10th all-time in CCU history.
Jefferson and Chanticleers begin their outdoor season on March 13-14 as they host the Coastal Carolina Invitational at Doug Shaw Stadium.
