CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina head women's tennis coach
Catherine Hewitt announced her 2020 signing class which includes three true freshmen in Jesse Hollins (Lexington, S.C.), Mathilde Tranberg (Hørsholm, Denmark), and Isabella Weatherhead (Pretoria, South Africa), as well as graduate transfer Kristyna Jurkova (Uherske Hradiste, Czech Republic/Saint Leo University).
"We are extremely pleased with this year's signing class," stated coach Hewitt. "With the addition of Jesse, Mathilde, Isabella, and Kristyna we have a strong and experienced incoming class. We look forward to working together to continue our model of a supportive team culture and a strong competitive environment which only helps us reach our full potential both on and off the court."
Jesse Hollins
Hollins comes to Coastal Carolina after helping River Bluff High School win the South Carolina 5A state team championship while winning the school's first-ever individual title. She wrapped up a perfect 27-0 senior season campaign in route to being named the Region 5-5A Player of the Year and High School Sports Report (HSSR) Miss Tennis and 5A Player of the Year. As a junior player, Hollins was ranked a four-star recruit while being ranked No. 9 in the Universal Tennis Rating, No. 8 in the state of South Carolina, No. 52 in the Southeast region, and No. 162 nationally by the Tennis Recruiting Network.
Mathilde Tranberg
Tranberg will join the Chanticleers all the way from Denmark. Currently ranked No. 17 in her home country, Tranberg won the U14 and U16 Danish championship in singles play while finishing as a runner-up at the U18 Danish championship. In 2018, her team won the Senior Danish Championship.
Isabella Weatherhead
Weatherhead comes to Coastal Carolina ranked No. 277 in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) U18 rankings. The South African native, reached No. 4 in the South African U18 rankings while finishing as a runner-up in the U18 South African Masters Tournament in 2019. She also represented South Africa in the African Junior Championships, reaching the quarterfinals in singles play and the semifinals in doubles action.
Kristyna Jurkova
A graduate transfer from Saint Leo University, Jurkova is a three-time All-Sunshine State Conference (SSC) team member in singles having earned first-team honors in 2017-18 and second-team honors in both 2016-17 and 2018-19. She also earned All-SSC first-team honors in doubles with her partner her junior season. Prior to the 2019-20 season being canceled, Jurkova was ranked No. 9 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Singles South Region poll and No. 5 in the ITA Doubles South Region poll after starting 7-3 in singles play and 9-3 in doubles action.
