Pair makes seven All-America scholars over the last three years
NORMAN, Okla. – The Coastal Carolina men's golf program had a pair of Chanticleers in States Fort and Brady Hinkle tabbed as 2019-20 Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced on Friday.
Fort, who graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in accounting and marketing, is a two-time GCAA All-America scholar having earned the honor last year in 2018-19. Over his senior season, which was shortened due to the coronavirus pandemic, Fort was second on the team with a 72.79 stroke average, the best single-season stroke average of his CCU career. Playing in seven tournaments for the Chanticleers on the year, his par-5 scoring average of 4.6184 led the team and ranks third all-time in CCU single-season history. He turned in two top-10 finishes on the season and shot eight rounds of par or better on the year, including three rounds in the 60's and a low-round 68 twice.
Hinkle wrapped up his second year at CCU with another perfect 4.0 GPA. A four-time member of the President's List (4.0 GPA) in his two years at Coastal, he teed off in five tournaments over the shortened 2019-20 season, playing as an individual at the TPC Dorado Beach Collegiate and the General Hackler Championship events. He posted a season stroke average of 73.31 over 13 rounds of play on the season, which ranked fourth overall on the team, while his par-3 scoring average of 3.0344 led the team and ranks third all-time in CCU single-season history. The South Carolina native, recorded one top 10 finish and totaled seven rounds of par or better on the year, including a low-round 70 twice.
With two Chants earning the annual academic honor this season, Coastal has now had multiple All-America scholars in each of the last three years, 2018, 2019, and 2020, and a total of seven honorees since 2017-18, the year current head coach Jim Garren took over the reins.
Prior to 2017, the Chants had just 10 All-America scholar selections overall.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a sophomore, junior, or senior academically in Division I, II, III, and NAIA, or receiving their associate's degree and in their last year of athletic eligibility in the NJCAA.
In addition, they must have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 78.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, 77.0 in NJCAA, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. For 2019-20 only, they must have participated in 40% of the team's competitive rounds.
A second announcement of Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars that include the second wave of nominations as well as those schools on the quarter system will be announced sometime next month.
