
Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams Earn ITA Academic Honors

SKILLMAN, N.J. – The Coastal Carolina men's and women's tennis teams were both tabbed 2020 Division I Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Teams. In addition, the women's team had eight of its student-athletes recognized as ITA Scholar-Athletes while the men's team had seven earn the individual honor.
The ITA All-Academic Team Award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or above on a 4.00 scale. All varsity letter winners are factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a student-athlete must be a varsity letter winner, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
The Chanticleer women's tennis program boasted a combined 3.849 GPA to lead all of the Coastal athletic programs for the fifth-straight year, and all women's programs for the seventh-straight year.
Somer Dalla-Bona, Maria Khomchenko, Jessie Mount, Flaminia Scara, Alexa Tiefel, Valentina Urelli, Iryna Vardanian, and Alicja Zduniak were all named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
It is the 22nd consecutive year that the women's team has received ITA All-Academic Team honors.
The Chanticleer men's tennis team posted a combined 3.743 GPA in 2019-20 to lead all of Coastal Carolina men's programs for the third consecutive year, and fourth time in the last five years.
The ITA Scholar-Athletes on the men's side includes Gonzalo Achondo, Juan Castellanos, Francesco Cori, Pyry Hyrkkonen, Joel Popov, Zak Talic, and Daiki Tanabe.
The Chanticleer men have received ITA All-Academic Team honors in 15 of the last 16 seasons.
