CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team will begin the 2020 season on the road when they face Georgia State Sunday, Sept. 20 at Central Parc Stadium. The match is set to begin at noon.
The Chanticleers were originally set to open the season this past Thursday evening, but Hurricane Sally had different plans for the opener causing the match to be postponed to a later date after dumping several inches of rain in the Conway area.
The new season will be head coach Paul Hogan's 10th at the helm of the women's program and his 14th season overall.
He enters the season with a 118-94-21 overall record and is CCU's all-time winningest coach with an 83-78-14 record.
The Chants return seven starters from last season's 7-9-2 team that made a run at the end of the season and played in the Sun Belt Conference Championship finals.
Leading the returners will be 2019 All-Sun Belt pick Sunny Sigurvinsdottir, who was also a 2020 preseason All-Sun Belt pick.
Mackenzie Cherry also returns and is the only player that played and started all 18 matches a year ago. Santana Pressley and Loranna Austin also return from last year, and both played in the team's 18 matches, starting 17.
Callie Hawkins missed a few matches last season but did manage to play in 16 of those with 12 starts, while Caeden Price also returns after starting 11 of the 13 matches she played in.
Rylee Attenberry started and played 11 matches in goal for the Chants. She logged over 976 minutes in goal with a 2.03 goals-against average and a team-best 22 saves.
It will be a much shorter season than usual with the COVID-19 pandemic the nation is going through this season with CCU only playing 10 regular season matches, all Sun Belt conference affairs. The games will be split evenly with five at home and five on the road before the Sun Belt Conference Championship set for early November.
