CCU’s Zack Taylor Paces Field on Day 1 of AGT Intercollegiate

Coastal Carolina men’s golf team is in second after one round of play

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Coastal Carolina fifth-year senior Zack Taylor carded a first-round score of 67, 5-under par, on Sunday to sit in a tie atop of the individual player leaderboard and help place the Chanticleers in second-place overall after one round of play at the Any Given Tuesday (AGT) Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, S.C.

Taylor, who is in a tie with Connor Coffee of Kennesaw State, started on the back nine with a 35, 1-under par, which included a birdie on the par-4 hole No. 16, and then overcame a bogey on the par-3 hole No. 2 with five total birdies on the front nine to finish with his opening-round 67.

As a team, the Chants are in second-place with a team score of 282, 6-under par. CCU is seven strokes behind day one leader Kennesaw State at 275, 13-under par.

"We had a decent start today. I thought our ball-striking was great, especially with how the wind was blowing. We just need to make a few more putts and our chipping needs to be better," stated head coach Jim Garren. "It was a great start for Zack (Taylor). States (Fort) also had a solid round today."

Behind Zack Taylor's team-low round of 67, was fellow fifth-year Chant States Fort with his first-round 70, 2-under par. In his first event as a Chant this year, Fort recorded three birdies, one bogey, and 14 pars to end day one in a tie for eighth-place overall.

Junior Connor Newton shot a 72, even par, on Sunday, to place in a tie for 15th overall and was one shot in front of fellow Chants Seth Taylor and Tyler Gray who carded matching rounds of 73, +1.

Newton had a team-high 16 pars to go along with one birdie and one bogey over his 18 rounds of play. Taylor finished with three birdies, two bogies, one double-bogey, and 12 pars, while Gray registered four birdies, two double-bogies, one bogey, and 11 pars on the day.

Rounding out the CCU lineup on Sunday was junior Brady Hinkle with a round of 79, +7. After a slow start that saw him shoot a 43, +7, on the back nine to start the day, Hinkle finished with nine-straight pars on the front nine to end his first round of play.

Coastal is in front of Jacksonville State (284, -4), FGCU (285, -3), Morehead State (288, E), Winthrop (292, +4), High Point (292, +4), Lipscomb (296, +8), Charleston Southern (297, +9), and USC Upstate (309, +21).

The Chants will tee off tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. ET.
