Former Coastal Men’s Soccer Coach Paul Banta Passes Away

Banta coached men’s soccer from 1984-97

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – Former Coastal Carolina University head men's soccer coach Paul Banta passed away this week peacefully in his home in Pawleys Island at the age of 75. He coached the Chanticleers from 1984-97.
 
Banta led the Chanticleers to three Big South regular-season championships in 1986, 1987, and 1989, and five Big South Tournament championships in 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, and 1995. He also led his team to two NCAA Men's Soccer Championship appearances, including advancing to the second round in 1992.
 
He was also named the Big South Coach of the Year in 1986, 1987, and 1989.
 
During his time at CCU, he also held the position of assistant athletic director and instructed health, physical education, and recreation. He remained employed at Coastal until 2001. 
 
Banta founded Global Soccer Ministries International (GSM) in 2001. He also authored a book entitled Coaching Soccer with Passion and Purpose in 2007.  
 
A private celebration of Paul's life will be held.
