CARY, N.C. – Led by
Bastien Huon's two singles wins on Friday, Coastal Carolina's men's tennis team posted six singles wins overall on day one of the ITA Carolina Regional Championships hosted by Duke University in Cary, N.C.
The Chants picked up wins from Huon,
Diego Giraldo,
Federico Garnier,
Neil O'Connor, and
Guilherme Toresan in the main singles draw.
Huon posted a first-round 6-3, 6-4 straight-set win over Yizhou Liu of Clemson, while Giraldo bounced back from a first-set loss to defeat Noah Borges of the College of Charleston 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round to draw Huon in the second round.
Huon was able to top his teammate, as he defeated Giraldo 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the round of 32 on Saturday.
Garnier won a very tight first-round match over Connor Laymon of Furman 7-6 (7), 6-7 (2), 6-1 to move on to the second round where he suffered a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Connor Krug of Duke to fall into the consolation draw.
O'Connor bounced back from a first-round 6-3, 6-3 loss to Benjamin Maes of Clemson to upend Josiah Schainblatt of The Citadel 6-2, 6-0 in the consolation bracket.
Like O'Connor, Toresan suffered a first-round 7-5, 6-2 loss to Mac Kiger of North Carolina but rebounded in the consolation draw to defeat Amit Baran of NCCU 6-2, 6-1.
CCU's
Carlos Berna Ruiz suffered an injury in his first-round match versus Logan Zapp of North Carolina and was forced to retire in the second set before playing hurt and gutting it out against Reece Falck of UNCW in a 6-1, 6-3 loss in the consolations.
The Chants will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 23, as both singles and doubles action will commence on day two of the ITA Carolina Regionals.
