CCU’s Sjoerdsma Awarded an AVCA Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship

Sjoerdsma is the volunteer coach for the volleyball team

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina women's volleyball volunteer assistant coach Wes Sjoerdsma has been named a 2021 recipient of an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship, it was announced this week.

Sjoerdsma is one of 18 recipients of the 2021 Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship.

For the 13th year, the American Volleyball Coaches Association will offer the Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship. The Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship was conceived as a way to engage young coaches and recent college graduates who are interested in pursuing a volleyball coaching position and give them a head start on their coaching career.

Scholarship recipients have the opportunity to interact with successful coaches from all levels and explore the networking and educational opportunities available at the AVCA Coaches convention that make this an annual can't-miss event.

This season, Sjoerdsma helped the Chanticleers go 18-8 overall on the regular season and post a 12-4 record in conference play. CCU finished behind only South Alabama (15-1) in the Sun Belt East Division regular-season standings and will play as the No. 2 East seed on Friday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. ET in the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament.

The Chants' 18 wins this season marks the eighth time in 10 seasons under head coach Jozsef Forman that CCU has recorded 18 wins or more in a single season.

Coastal had four players earn Sun Belt Conference postseason honors, as graduate transfer Cheyenne Jones was named the Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Sun Belt second team.

Super senior Ani Bozdeva was named to the All-Sun Belt first team for the second consecutive season while joining Jones on the second team was graduate transfer Doris Carter and junior setter Brigitta Petrenko.

The Chanticleers will take on the winner of the No. 3 West and No. 6 East seeded first-round matchup on Friday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. ET in Foley, Ala.
