ATLANTA, Ga. – The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team posted a 2-1 record over three matches on Wednesday at the Georgia State Day of Duals in Atlanta, Ga.
The Sandy Chants were edged by the nationally-ranked Georgia State Panthers 3-2 in the first match of the day and then bounced back to blank Chattanooga 5-0 and hold off Mercer 3-2 to finish the day at 2-1 overall.
The Chanticleers (4-3) will return to action this weekend, March 13-14, to compete at the Carolina Challenge hosted by South Carolina in Columbia, S.C.
Match 1: No. 18 Georgia State 3, Coastal Carolina 2
Coastal Carolina looked to get the program's first-ever win over a nationally-ranked opponent on Wednesday morning, however, the Chants fell to the No. 18 nationally-ranked Georgia State Panthers by a score of 3-2 in the first of three matches at the Georgia State Day of Duals.
The loss was the second 3-2 loss to a nationally-ranked team this season for the Chanticleers and the third overall loss on the year, all to nationally-ranked top-20 teams.
The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead, as Kate Novack and Bella Ferary defeated the duo of
Emma Gonzalez and
Carli Ginther in straight sets 21-16, 21-9 at the No. 4 spot while the team of Maddie Gordon and Becky Tresham defeated the veteran duo of
Kalin Eske and
Kendra Lukacs in straight sets 21-14, 21-13 at the No. 5 flight.
The nationally-ranked Panthers then picked up a win at the No. 1 flight, as Maddy Delmonte and Eden Hawes held off the Coastal duo of
Irena Drobnjak and
Sarlota Svobodova for a 21-18, 21-19 win.
Despite the match already being decided, the Chanticleers continued to fight and earned victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 courts.
The tandem of
Lucy Campbell and
Martine Kragholm stormed back from a first set 21-19 loss to take the next two sets at 21-17 and 15-11 and the match win over Mattie Johnson and Olivia Stasevich, while the freshmen duo of
Sarah Riedell and
Ellie Hanford picked up a win in three sets at 21-17, 17-21, 15-11 over Meagan McCall and Kelly Dorn on court No. 3.
Match 2: Coastal Carolina 5, Chattanooga 0
After suffering a 3-2 setback in the first match of the day versus the host No. 18 Georgia State, the Chanticleers blanked Chattanooga 5-0 in the second match of the Georgia State Day of Duals.
The Chants got off to an early 2-0 lead as the Chattanooga Mocs had to forfeit two contests at No. 2 and No. 3.
The No 5 flight of Lukas and
Madison Allred clinched the match with a straight-set 21-17, 21-16 win.
The Chants then completed the sweep as the team of Gonzalez and Ginther won in three sets 21-14, 15-21,15-12 on court No. 4 before the top flight pair of Drobjnak and Svobodova ended the match with a 21-19, 21-11 win at the No. 1 position.
Match 3: Coastal Carolina 3, Mercer 2
The Sandy Chants capped off the day of duals with a 3-2 win over ASUN foe Mercer.
Coastal put the match away early, as the Chants picked up wins on court No. 5, No. 4, and No. 1 to take a 3-0 lead.
The team of Eske and Lukacs opened the match with a 21-10, 21-14 win at No. 5, while the pair of Gonzalez and Ginther followed with a 21-11, 21-13 straight-sets win at No. 4.
CCU's win at court No. 1 proved to be vital, as the sophomore duo of Drobnjak and Svobodova held on for a 21-18, 22-20 victory to seal the win for the Chants.
The three points were important, as Mercer claimed wins on court No. 2 and 3 to put the final score at 3-2.
