Columbia, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team posted a 2-0 day on Saturday at the Carolina Challenge in Columbia, S.C.
The Sany Chants defeated not one but two ASun foes in Jacksonville and Mercer on day one of the two-day event hosted by South Carolina.
Match 1: Coastal Carolina 5, Jacksonville 0
After picking up two wins at the Georgia State Day of Duals on Wednesday of this week, the Chanticleers carried momentum into Saturday and blanked the Jacksonville Dolphins 5-0 in the first match of the Carolina Challenge. The win was the second consecutive win over the dolphins.
The Chants got off to an early 1-0 lead as the Jacksonville Dolphins had to forfeit one contest at No. 5.
The sophomore duo of
Irena Drobnjak and
Sarlota Svobodova followed with a straight-set 21-16, 21-10 win at the top flight to put CCU up 2-0.
The No. 4 flight of
Carli Ginther and
Emma Gonzalez clinched the match for the Chants with a identical scores of 21-13, 21-13 in the straight-set win.
The Chants then completed the sweep as the team of
Sarah Riedell and
Ellie Hanford won in straight sets 21-13, 21-8 on court No. 3 before the junior pair of
Lucy Campbell and
Martine Kragholm ended the match with a 21-16, 21-19 win at the No. 2 position.
Match 2: Coastal Carolina 4, Mercer 1
The Chants picked up where they left off after the morning match defeating the Mercer Bears for the second time this week. CCU defeated the Bears 3-2 on Wednesday and followed up with a 4-1 win on Saturday. The win on Saturday marked the third consecutive win against Mercer.
Coastal put the match away early, as the Chants picked up wins on court No. 2, No. 1, No.5, and No. 4 to take a 4-0 lead all on straight-set victories.
The tandem of Kragholm and Campbell opened the match with a 21-11, 21-9 win at No. 2, as the team of Drobnjak and Svobodova followed at No. 1 with a 21-10, 21-15 victory to put Coastal up 2-0 in the match.
The pair of Kalin Eske and Kendra Lukas won at 21-11, 21-15 on court No. 5, while the duo of Gonzalez and Ginther followed with a 21-11, 21-13 at No. 4.
The Mercer Bears claimed a win on court No. 3 to spoil the sweep and put the final score at 4-1.
