COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team fell 3-0 to the nationally-ranked No. 10 South Carolina Gamecocks on Sunday afternoon in Columbia, S.C. With the loss, the Chanticleers fall to 7-8 on the year while the win improved the Gamecocks to 9-3 on the season.
As been the case the whole spring season for Coastal, the Chants used a mixture of veteran players with newcomers on Sunday afternoon, looking to gain valuable experience for a very young team.
Nationally-ranked South Carolina outshot the visiting Chanticleers 28-3, as 14 shots on target. The Gamecocks also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Despite giving up the three goals, sophomore
Ky Hudson recorded a career-high 11 saves while freshman
Carleigh Frilles, sophomore
Santana Pressley, and junior
Mackenzie Cherry attempted the three shots for Coastal.
The host Gamecocks opened the scoring in the opening minute as Ryan Gareis beat the Chants' goalkeeper for the eventual game-winning goal off the feed from Lauren Chang. USC added a second goal in the first 45 minutes as Jylissa Harris filled the back of the net as Catherine Barry and Chang recorded the double assist to lead 2-0.
Hudson made four saves in the first half of play while both Frilles and Cherry both fired shots that ended up wide right.
In the second half, with just 16 seconds expiring from the clock South Carolina's Barry added the final goal of the match for the 3-0 advantage.
CCU's Pressley fired a shot in the 83rd minute that was just high.
