GREENVILLE, N.C. – Led by four Chanticleers in the top-15 on the individual player leaderboard, the Coastal Carolina men's golf team sits atop of the team leaderboard at 574, 2-under par, after 36 holes of play at the ECU Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C.
The Chanticleers were the lone team to shoot under par over the first two rounds of play, carding rounds of 282 and 292 to enter the final round of play on Tuesday seven shots in front of the current second-place team Appalachian State (581, +5).
"We had a solid day today. The wind blew pretty hard all day and the guys handled it well," stated head coach
Jim Garren. "It was unfortunate that we dropped so many shots coming in to the clubhouse but we are in a position to win and need to have a big day tomorrow."
Despite strong winds all day long, fifth-year senior
Zack Taylor carded back-to-back sub-par rounds of 70, 2-under par, and 69, 3-under par, to end the day in a tie for second overall with a 36-hole score of 139, 5-under par. Taylor is just two strokes behind the 36-hole leader Evan Brown of Loyola (Md.) at 137, 7-under par.
The top CCU golfer turned in a team-high nine birdies, four bogeys, and 23 pars over his first two rounds of play on Monday. His nine birdies came on eight different holes as he birdied only one hole, the par-5 No. 17, twice on the day.
Behind Taylor and in a tie for ninth place overall are both
States Fort and
Tyler Gray at 145, +1.
Fort shot rounds of 72, even par, and 73, +1, on Monday, which included six birdies and 24 pars, as he was a combined 2-under par on the front nine and +3 on the back nine on the day.
Gray got to his 36-hole score of 145, +1, with rounds of 71, 1-under par, and 74, +2. The junior golfer opened the day with 12-straight pars on his first round before going bogey, par, par, birdie, birdie, par over his final six holes. He then turned in two birdies and a bogey on the front nine and one birdie, two bogeys, and one double bogey on the back nine over his second round in the afternoon session.
Playing in only his second tournament this season and first in the CCU lineup,
Jorgen Viken recorded rounds of 69, 3-under par, and 77, +5, to place in a tie for 13th overall at 146, +2. Viken, who matched the lowest first-round score of the day at 69 had five birdies over his first 18 holes of play, which included shooting a 33, 3-under par on the front nine. Over his second round, the first-year Chant carded 13 pars and five bogeys for his round of 77.
Rounding out the lineup for the Chants on Monday was sophomore
Seth Taylor who ended the day in a tie for 41st overall at 151, +7. The second-year Chant had four birdies on the day but was up-and-down all day with seven bogeys, two double bogeys, and 23 pars over his 36 holes of play.
Playing as an individual in his second consecutive event,
Viktor Olund shot rounds of 73, +1, and 74, +2, to finish with a 36-hole score of 147, +3, good enough to place him in a log jam at 16th-place overall. He finished his two rounds of play at even par on the front nine with two birdies and two bogeys and was +3 on the back nine with two birdies and five bogeys on Monday.
The Chanticleers will tee-off in the last group along with App State and Maryland (582, +6) on hole No. 1 beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET.
