COLUMBIA, S.C. - On Friday, junior David Ejumeta led the Coastal Carolina track and field team on day one of the Weems Baskin Invitational with his second long jump victory of the 2021 outdoor season.
Overall, the Chanticleers finished the opening day with seven top-five finishes on South Carolina's Cregger Track.
Men
Along with Ejumeta, Dallas Wise and Alex Spillum finished in the top five of the collegiate long jumpers.
Ejumeta earned his second victory of the year with a distance of 7.47 meters. Wise earned his third top-five finish this season in the long jump event with a third-place finish on the afternoon with a jump of 7.20 meters. Spillum finished sixth overall on the day with a mark of 7.00 meters.
Javelin thrower Aaron Keeler earned his best finish of the season as the freshman placed second with his second-best throw of the season at 47.21 meters.
Kwesi Jackson earned a top-five finish for the first time in his career in the men's hammer throw on Friday afternoon. The junior picked up a fourth-place finish in the event as he threw a personal best of 47.65 meters.
CCU's junior Ryver Morrow tied for seventh place in the pole vault with Lindsay Pierce of The Citadel as the duo reached a height of 4.15 meters.
Women
Heats three through six of the 100 and 400 meters took place on Friday afternoon, while heats one and two and the finals will be featured on Saturday during the Weems' Baskin final day.
In the 400 meters, freshmen sprinters Amelia Canetto and Alyssa Smith finished with new personal best times 1:00.62 and 1:01.42, respectively.
Freshmen Amaryah White and Erin Palmer racked up two of the top-five fastest times in the 100 meters. White had the event's second-fastest time at 12.37 (0.0), and Palmer finished fifth at 12.41 (0.0). Fellow freshman Sydney Clemens rounded out the Chanticieer team with the ninth-fastest time at 12.75 (-1.1).
In the field, throwers Alexis Estep and Kacey Lombard finished in the top 15 in Friday's hammer throw.
The freshman Estep finished in ninth-place with a throw of 40.34 meters, while Lombard placed 13tth with a personal best throw of 36.83 meters.
Freshman Mycal Bowser finished the day tied with USC's Dymier Jeffery for 14th in the long jump with a mark of 4.97 meters.
Day two will start on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET with the men's shot put and will run through 5:30 p.m. ET with the final event of the day, the 4x400-meter relay race.
