Austin’s Late Goal Lifts Chants to 1-0 Win Over the Cougars

Coastal Carolina women’s soccer picks up first win of the spring season

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory over the College of Charleston Cougars, Thursday evening at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. With the win, the Chanticleers improved to 7-6 on the season while the Cougars fall to 0-4.

The opening half ended in a tie as the Chants held a slight advantage with five shots while College of Charleston finished with four attempts.

The Cougars started the second half with a vengeance trying to crack the stellar play of CCU's Ky Hudson by firing nine shots in the final 45 minutes to finish with 13 shots on the night. Hudson finished with five saves to earn the win.

With each team fighting to gain the momentum, the Chanticleers capitalized in the 85th minute when Megan Brouse found Loranna Austin for the redirect to the back of the net. The CCU defense held stout for the final five minutes to earn the victory.

Coastal's Austin and Brouse paced the offense with two shots each while the quintet of Lauren Denning, Carleigh Frilles, Santan Pressley, Rose Behrmann, and Maria Folgero fired one shot each.

For the Cougars, Olivia Freitas attempted three shots to lead the attack while Leah Deutsch, Kacey Smekrud, Mary Katherine Waters, and Maddie Cybulski had two attempts apiece. Lindsay Stravolo allowed the late goal to take the loss for the host school.

Coastal Carolina will return to action on March 14, as the Chants will travel to Durham, N.C. to take on the Duke Blue Devils. The opening kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
